The La Calabaza Trend: Meaning, Song and the Dancing Cats
Where the La Calabaza dancing cats came from, what the song is, how the dance goes, and how to put your own pet or friends in it.

La Calabaza is the TikTok trend where three kittens stand in a row by a roadside at night and dance to “LA CALABAZA (TINIEBLA Edit)” by Pumpky, the one in the middle wearing a black cowboy hat. “La calabaza” is Spanish for “the pumpkin”. The original kittens were made with AI by the TikTok account @meowtakeover, and a La Calabaza AI dance video does the same thing with your photos: you, your friends or your pet become the three dancers, with the original sound on the video.
What Does “La Calabaza” Mean?
“La calabaza” means “the pumpkin”. The track is named that as a play on the producer’s own name: Pumpky, pumpkin, calabaza. There isn’t much more to translate. According to the song explainer account @historia_de_una_cancion, the hook is basically just the words “la calabaza”, and no lyrics have been published. If you’re looking for “la calabaza lyrics in English”, that’s really all there is to it.
The La Calabaza Song
The song is “LA CALABAZA (TINIEBLA Edit)” by Pumpky, an independent Latin American guaracha producer who posts on TikTok as @pumpkylacalabaza (Informador, Canal 44). Guaracha is a fast, high-energy electronic dance style that’s popular in Latin America, especially Colombia, Mexico and Chile.
- The TikTok sound: “sonido original - Pumpky”, a 19-second sound created on December 29, 2025 (TikTok).
- The full track: 2:00 long, on streaming since January 8, 2026 (Spotify). Sony Music’s B1 Recordings re-released the single on September 8, 2026, under license from the label División Rec.
- The video: an official visualizer went up on YouTube on September 11, 2026 (YouTube).
- How it sounds: a quiet intro, then the beat drops at about 4.4 seconds, at roughly 130 BPM. That drop is the moment everyone in the video starts bouncing.
Where the La Calabaza Trend Came From
People were dancing to Pumpky’s sound before the cats showed up. The early version was a hand dance: hands rolling and waving in front of the chest. For example, @jessicuhhhhh_ doing it in scrubs in a parking garage on July 24, 2026, which has 8.9 million views.
The trend as most people know it started on August 27, 2026, when @meowtakeover, an account that posts AI-made kittens, put up a 14-second vertical clip. Three kittens stand upright by a low concrete curb at the edge of a road at night, with street lights and car lights behind them, filmed from low down. The left kitten is ginger, the middle one is white with a black cowboy hat, and the right one is black and white with round glasses. On October 20, 2026, TikTok showed 29.2 million views, 4.1 million likes and 2.3 million shares on it.
So, are the La Calabaza cats real? No. They were made with AI by an AI kitten account, not filmed.
How the La Calabaza Dance Goes
The original clip runs 14 seconds, and every remake follows the same beats:
- 0–2 s: the three stand still, heads bowed, as the camera moves in.
- About 2.5 s: heads come up.
- 3–4 s: front paws (or hands) spread out to the sides, palms open, waving.
- About 4.4 s, the beat drops: paws roll and cross in front of the chest, everyone leans side to side, hips sway, little bounces.
- About 8 s: a lean to one side.
- 9–10 s: they turn around and show their backs (and tails).
- 11–12 s: they turn back and step in place.
- 13–14 s: they step toward the camera, the middle one closest.
Why It Took Off
- Three kittens in sync. One of them wears a cowboy hat, and the moves are simple enough to copy with any pet or person.
- Everyone has a pet. Remakes moved to other animals, like three dachshunds in the same roadside scene from @salchihermanosoficial on September 9, 2026 (54.7 million views, marked as AI-generated by TikTok), and people’s own pets animated from a single photo with a CapCut template.
- People do it too. @abadieeee did the dance himself on a balcony at night while the sky flashed with lightning on September 16, 2026, and got 30.1 million views.
- The pumpkin. A trend called “the pumpkin” lands right before Halloween. There are Halloween versions with kittens in pumpkin costumes in a pumpkin field, and the trend is peaking in October 2026.
- Brands joined in. Walmart, Domino’s México, Coffee mate and others posted their own versions (Monkey Solutions).
On October 20, 2026, TikTok listed 57,062 videos and 548.9 million views under #lacalabaza and 5,028 videos under #lacalabazatiktok. Pumpky’s sound had been used in 112,400 videos, and a green-screen copy of the kittens’ sound in 245,600.
How the AI Version Works
A La Calabaza AI dance video is generated from your photos plus a written description of the routine. It isn’t a face swap onto the original clip. We use Seedance 2.0 Mini, ByteDance’s video model, through an AI video API.
What comes from the trend:
- Three dancers side by side in a row, the middle one in a black cowboy hat
- The routine: standing still, hands up, the beat drop, the bounce and hip sway, the lean, the turn, the step up to the camera
- The original La Calabaza sound, the same audio as “sonido original - Pumpky”, added to every video
- The vertical 9:16 format of TikTok, Reels and Shorts
What comes from your photos:
- Who the dancers are: you, your friends, or your cat, dog or any other pet (pets stand up on their hind legs)
- How many different dancers there are: one photo makes identical triplets, two photos put photo 1 in the middle with twins on both sides, and three photos make three different dancers
The AI makes up the background and lighting. It aims for a night street like the original, but it can sometimes keep the background from your photo instead.
Make Your Own La Calabaza AI Dance Video
Upload 1 to 3 photos in the generator on the homepage, pick 6, 10 or 15 seconds (6, 13 or 20 credits) and wait a few minutes. The step-by-step guide, with photo tips, is here: how to make a La Calabaza AI dance video.
Join the Trend Responsibly

La Calabaza Trend FAQ
Is this site the official La Calabaza app? No. La Calabaza AI Dance is an independent fan-made tool. It isn’t affiliated with TikTok, ByteDance, CapCut, @meowtakeover, Pumpky or any of the creators mentioned on this page.
Is there a dog version of La Calabaza? Yes. The best known is three dachshunds in the same roadside scene, the left one in a flat cap and the middle one in a cowboy hat, posted by @salchihermanosoficial. You can make one with your own dog: one photo gives you three of them.
Is La Calabaza a Halloween trend? Sort of. It started in the summer of 2026, but since “la calabaza” means “the pumpkin”, it fits Halloween perfectly, and it’s peaking in October 2026 with pumpkin-costume versions.
Can I do the La Calabaza dance myself? Yes. Plenty of people film it themselves, like the lightning balcony version. If you’d rather not dance, upload a photo of yourself and the AI puts you in the trio: one photo makes three of you, or add two friends for three different dancers.
